In the dark days of 2003 the emerging Chicago neighborhood of Buena Park was seriously underserved in regards to bars and restaurants (we could still use a couple more). One of our local haunts was a dingy little dive known as The Side Bar Cafe. It eventually closed and while for the best, many of us were a bit sad to have our slim options further narrowed. We, the neighborhood, soon learned that there would be new owners coming soon. We anticipated a not so careful reduction of grime and perhaps a few buckets of paint splashed about. To our great surprise we got something completely different in The Bar on Buena.

When The Bar on Buena opened its doors on July 5 2003 we found our neighborhood in possession of a warm, modern, and dare I say attractive little neighborhood pub that held no resemblance to their ill-fated predecessors. The food was fresh; the beer taps glistening with a clever selection of micro-brews and imports. The neighborhood was quite pleased and this reclusive beverage expert had found his local.

The Bar on Buena is the realization of a dream by two high school mates, Aaron Zacharias and Steve Podjasek. They determined to shake of the shackles off the corporate world to open a pub. Some would suggest that this is simply trading one kind of madness for another but we are pleased to be the benefactors of this move. Since its opening date the BOB (as it’s known to locals) has been in constant motion continually upgrading their draft system and storage to offer a greater selection of craft beers both on draft and by the bottle. Today patrons have their choice of 100 plus ales and lagers.

In recent years the BOB has become a serious whisky bar as well and now offer dozens of single malts including some rare single cask selections. Tasting flights are offered making this a great spot for beginning whisky fans to broaden their experiences. A generous offering of Bourbon and Irish whiskey can also be found. Staff education is strongly emphasized here so you’re never adrift alone when navigating the extensive menu.

Beyond the exotic pints and the fancy drams is a cozy neighborhood pub with all of the expected comforts and a welcoming and always unpretentious feel; exactly what I seek. Many others must feel the same as the BOB always has a healthy collection of regulars and first visitors scattered about the bar stools, quiet corner booths, or the couch with the sidewalk view. If you see me say hello.
