County Clare in Milwaukee is an unexpected gem serving up Irish/American hospitality and comfort. The lively pub and inn is dripping in Irish lore with its carved maple wood bar, fireplace, stained glass and Irish pub décor. It carries its Irish theme without being clichéd. It feels authentic, as it is clearly a Milwaukee pub as well.
The bar is ideally set for a Beer enthusiast featuring Irish Ales and a great selection of American micro brews. There are enough Irish Spirits to keep the Whiskey lover in clover for an afternoon or a weekend.
The menu features Irish Pub classics such as shepherd’s pie, Guinness pot roast, bangers and mash, and Irish Lamb Stew. There are plenty of sandwiches and starters as well. I have always found the food to be tasty with a homemade touch. This is not haute cuisine rather straightforward pub fare served up in generous portions.
The greatest thing about County Clare is not it’s ample beverage selection or fresh pub dishes rather their cheerful service. When you are at County Clare you are made to feel like a guest not just a customer. On every visit I have been treated to friendly and professional care from the front desk crew, the bartenders, the wait staff, and anyone else you may encounter.
This is the kind of pub you want to find on an inclement day. You find yourself a comfy barstool and you settle in for the day sampling the beverages, a few nibbles, and swap stories with the bartender until the evening steals the afternoon. Now that’s a day and sadly one that I have yet to enjoy as each time I have been at the County Clare I have had an agenda. One day…
The rooms upstairs can be a godsend if you know what I mean. The guest rooms, like the pub, are cozy and very homey – that is if you have a double Jacuzzi tub in your home. The rooms are not on to themselves spectacular but ultra clean and well equipped but best of all they are a touch of the lift call button away after the evening’s last nightcap has been consumed. Now that’s convenience.
The greatest praise I can heap on the County Clare is that I am just a few weeks removed from my last visit and I am plotting an excuse to return. Perhaps my lost pub day is not far away…
